Cardiology

The Cardiology Suite is a subdivision of the Division of Cardiology in the Department of Medicine. The suite is staffed by highly-skilled medical and administrative staff that provides cardiac diagnostic procedures. There is close interaction with the Cardiology Department at Maimonides Medical Center, thus providing contact with specialists in all areas of Cardiology in order to improve patient care. The procedures in our Cardiology Suite are performed on an outpatient basis and include:

  • Echocardiography, including transesophageal echocardiography (TEE)
  • Stress Testing, including all modalities
  • Nuclear Cardiology
  • 24-hour ambulatory EKG monitoring (Holter EKG)

Providing the Most Advanced Digital Technology in Cardiac Care

Echocardiography: An ultrasound probe is placed on the chest and images of the heart are seen on a monitor. The function of the heart and its valves can be evaluated. No preparation is needed for this completely harmless test.

Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE): This specialized test is used in rare cases of heart disease to obtain clearer images of small structures within the heart. The ultrasound probe is placed into the esophagus through the mouth, where internal images are taken.

Stress Testing: In order to evaluate the blood flow to the heart during exercise, our team conducts a treadmill test. For those patients who are unable to exercise well enough, we offer the "pharmacologic stress test," with which a similar effect is achieved with an intravenous drug.

The stress test is often combined with Nuclear Imaging. Additional information is obtained by acquiring images that show the blood flow to the heart during stress and at rest. For the nuclear imaging, the patient receives a small and harmless intravenous dose of a radionuclide. The images are obtained by a specialized camera.

Holter Monitoring is used to detect arrhythmia. The patient receives a small monitor that records every heart beat for a duration of 24 hours, which detects any irregularities.
