Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced the $1.4 billion Vital Brooklyn initiative
that will transform the Central Brooklyn region. The groundbreaking proposal
will target and invest in eight integrated areas, establishing a national
paradigm for addressing chronic disparities, like systemic violence and
entrenched poverty in high-need communities.
The comprehensive plan will focus on increasing access to open spaces and
healthy food, while transforming the healthcare system by increasing access
and quality of health care services and preventive care. Vital Brooklyn
will also create a stronger, more sustainable Central Brooklyn by prioritizing
strategic investments in resiliency and affordable housing, as well as
job creation, youth development, and community violence prevention.
In response, Dr. Linda Brady, President & CEO of Kingsbrook Health
Care System shared these sentiments: “Governor Cuomo’s innovative
multidimensional and integrated wellness initiative for Central Brooklyn
is not only a model for New York State, it places him among the few forward
thinking elected officials nationally. Over seventy percent of the factors
that lead to better health and wellness are related to the social determinants
of health such as safe affordable housing and environments, access to
healthy and affordable foods, education that leads to good paying careers
and jobs, safe and open spaces in which people can be physically active,”
stated Dr. Brady. “He is addressing the root causes of the health
disparities that plague our communities. Kingsbrook looks forward to working
with the Governor’s office and our community to create a Medical
Village on our campus and provide vital components of this wellness initiative.
We appreciate and applaud Governor Cuomo’s vision and commitment
to Central Brooklyn.”
