Mission:

The residency training program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center is dedicated to the education of physicians in the art and practice of physical medicine and rehabilitation. The goal of the program is to train highly skilled physiatrists that provide excellent care for people with disabilities and serve as an advocate for their needs.

Overview of Program

The residency training program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center was established in 1959 and is one of the oldest in the United States. Residents rotate through inpatient and outpatient facilities and receive a balanced and broad exposure to all aspects of rehabilitation medicine in a variety of settings. These facilities include:

  • Kingsbrook Rehabilitation Institute-the largest inpatient rehabilitation unit in Brooklyn and the only one accredited for Traumatic Brain Injury;
  • b) Metropolitan Hospital-Pain and Palliative Care;
  • c) Lenox Hill Hospital-Sports Medicine
  • d) Coler-Goldwater-Spinal Cord Injury, Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation;
  • d) Long Island College Hospital-Neurology.

Residents also have the opportunity to work with physiatrists in private office settings.

The didactic curriculum has recently undergone a major revision and follows a "modular" approach to the field of rehabilitation medicine. In this approach residents receive focused training on various topics in rehabilitation medicine that includes didactic lectures, faculty presentations, case studies, journal club, "gym rounds", board style questions and "board review club". An anatomy lab experience is also part of the training program. In this curriculum, there is a strong emphasis on board preparation, quality improvement methodology, scholarly activity and development of teaching skills.

Residents receive personalized attention to their professional development through a mentored approach and individualized career counseling. This is accomplished through a synergistic approach to their career goals that combines training in: a) leadership b) communication and interpersonal skills c) scholarly work d) quality improvement and research methodology. Residents also receive training in leadership and the business skills as they apply to the field of rehabilitation medicine.

The program has an excellent record of placement of its graduates in fellowship programs in the following sub-specialties of rehabilitation medicine: a) pain management b) palliative care c) spinal cord injury d) pediatric rehabilitation and e) traumatic brain injury.

The program offers a highly competitive salary and benefit package that also includes a generous book allowance per year. Senior residents also receive financial support for the following conferences: a) national AAPMR meeting b) Board review course and Prosthetics and Orthotics course.

Program Requirements for graduation:

  • It is strongly recommended that all residents pass all Steps of the USMLE by the end of their PGY 1 year and no later than the end of their PGY2 year.
