The 25-bed Traumatic Brain Injury and Coma Recovery Unit (TBI), the only New York State approved program of its kind in Brooklyn, is a specialized service within the Rehabilitation Institute. It serves adults with head injuries and neurological conditions resulting from:
- Violence
- Vehicular Accidents
- Brain Tumors
- Anoxia
- Hemorrhagic Stroke
- Head Injury secondary to falls
The services of Kingsbrook's TBI Unit are individualized, because no two people with brain injuries are exactly alike. Patients in coma are treated in order to improve alertness, responsiveness and to prevent physical deterioration. Vocational services assist brain injured patients identify strengths, improve areas of challenge and explore new work interests as necessary. Pre-injury interests and the introduction of new activities are fostered through Therapeutic Recreation. The primary goal of the program is to assist patients in achieving maximum independence by the time of discharge and begin the process of reintegration into the community.
