Brooklyn, New York--Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center recently received a grant from the Fan Fox & Leslie Samuel Foundation, Inc. in support of their Palliative Care Program, designed to relieve the level of suffering for elderly patients facing complex illnesses while improving their quality of life and supporting those close to them. The grant will fund Kingsbrook’s program with $200,000, for aggressive program expansion and support expenditures for personnel, training and educational efforts. There will also be a committed effort to increase community awareness via outreach and education.
The grant supports the appointment of Dr. Sarita Patel, who as leader of the program will be responsible for developing internal referral linkages among various departments and special care areas of Kingsbrook, expanding the capacity of the program to include hospital and long term care facility services and ultimately increasing the number of palliative care consultations. Additionally, Kingsbrook will focus on providing professional training to the program’s core team and increasing staff awareness via ground-rounds and special in-services.
“Severe illness (of any type) causes pain, impacting a patient physically and psychologically,” states Dr. Linda Brady, President & CEO of Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center. “We take great pride in being able to bring palliative care services to our community, thereby decreasing our patients' suffering and improving the quality of their lives.”
