Brooklyn, New York--Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center (KJMC) located at 585 Schenectady Avenue in Brooklyn, between Rutland Road and Winthrop Street will commence its 2007 public health education and awareness program on February 1
st by offering all members of the public opportunities to get screened Diabetes. Through the support of, and in partnership with
The Foundation for Medical Evaluation and Early Detection, medical personnel from the medical center’s network of family health centers, with locations throughout Brooklyn, will provide Diabetes screenings at not cost to all residents of Central Brooklyn.
The prevalence of diabetes in New York City has more than doubled in the past eight years. However, in Brooklyn it exceeds the national average with 1 in 10 residents of our immediate Flatbush area suffering from the disease. Ninety percent (90%) of persons with this condition suffer from type 2 adult onset diabetes. Further research shows that 50% of new diabetes cases in children are type 2, which, although is the adult onset type of diabetes, has become prevalent in our youth, secondary to the growing incidence of obesity.
“Kingsbrook continues to work arduously to form partnerships with other organizations to ensure that our residents are the beneficiaries of important and much needed health screenings without cost to them,” states Ms. Enid Dillard, Director of Marketing & Public Affairs at Kingsbrook. She adds, “It is our fervent hope that our community residents will start the new year the healthy way by getting screened for diabetes, as early detection remains the key to combating this disease. At Kingsbrook we consistently seek new approaches to educate and safeguard the health and well being of the individuals and families that we serve, and do hope that persons will use these opportunities to become aware of their health status and circumvent the onset of diabetes or receive any necessary information and/or treatment advise.”
Following is the schedule for February’s free Diabetes screening initiative.
