Brooklyn, NY-- Kingsbrook partnered with Brooklyn Queens Long Island-Area Health Education Center (BQLI-AHEC) to develop a summer learning and mentorship program that would expose young people to various components of health education research and production. The six week program engaged 29 students ages 15-20, from 23 schools in Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island and Staten Island. Students were charged with identifying health issues most relevant to young people and researching those topics for the production of a teen health & wellness television program.

The students organized themselves into special research teams and identified teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, teen violence and suicide as health issues most prevalent among today’s youth. They worked ardently to build well researched content and discussion points to support the televised round table discussion that featured each research team.

“This partnership is ideal as BQLI-AHEC is committed to improving health care outcomes in underserved areas through the development of education, mentoring, and training programs to increase the pool of skilled providers working in underserved communities,” said Enid Dillard, Director of Marketing & Public Affairs at Kingsbrook. “When it comes to health and wellness disparities in our communities, the key is educating the younger generation about risk factors, warning signs and preventive care way ahead of time. With this knowledge, we hope young people will apply this to their every day decisions and help educate others as well.”

BQLI-AHEC’s Summer Health Internship Program (SHIP), places students in preceptor sites in Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island based on their fields of interest in health careers. The students spend over twenty hours per week at their sites, interacting daily with physicians, other healthcare professionals, and with patients. A didactic session is provided once a week with lectures and presentations from various health professionals. Students also learn about different health issues specifically affecting their communities, and carry out group projects directed at certain pertinent topics that most interest them.
